Middlehope Old (Fluorite) Mine, Middlehope Moor, Middlehope Bank, Durham.

Back to Mine Index

Middlehope Old Mine originally was a lead mine and it was driven above the firestone and worked the Longsike Vein, the mine adit was called the Wagon Firestone Level, but this name might have come from later workings (note that on an old plan the mine is call Old Middlehope Mine, and the names seem to be interchangeable). The original workings are very old and the vein can be traced on the surface by a number of shafts. The mine was reopened and worked for fluorspar until the late 1970's. It was then worked again in the 1980's. The mine was connected to Burtree Pasture Mine in the west.
